It depends mostly on who holds your lease and what your lease contract says. Tesla publishes a way for an outside buyer to purchase a leased car. Honda, Acura, BMW and GM Financial limit the purchase to you or their own brand dealers, and in our experience Toyota and Lexus have stopped accepting outside payoffs since October 1, 2026.
We found no published rule on outside buyers from Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan or Ford, so you have to ask them. The lenders that limit outside buyers stop the big online car buyers from buying many leased cars. We can still buy many of those cars, so check with us before you return a car with equity.
Quick facts
If your lease has a purchase option, the contract lists its price: what the lender will sell you the car for at the end. If the car is worth more than that today, the difference is equity. Return the car and the equity stays with the lender. Sell it, trade it or buy it, and it can stay with you.
An example, not a quote: if your purchase option is $24,000 and a buyer would pay $27,000 for the car today, there is $3,000 of equity. Whether a buyer other than you is even allowed to pay off the lease is the question this article answers.
| Lender | Can an outside buyer buy the car out? | What the lender says, and what we see |
|---|---|---|
| Toyota Financial Services | Restricted since October 1, 2026, in our experience | In our experience, since October 1, 2026, Toyota has stopped accepting payoffs from outside buyers such as the big online car buyers. The lender's page, read on October 14, still describes assigning your purchase option to a third-party dealer, so confirm for your own contract. |
| Lexus Financial Services | Restricted since October 1, 2026, in our experience | Same as Toyota. Lexus's page, read on October 14, also still describes assigning your purchase option to a third-party dealer, so confirm for your own contract. |
| Honda Financial Services and Acura Financial Services | Restricted | Lease purchases are only available to the lessee or an authorized Honda or Acura dealer. |
| BMW Financial Services | Restricted | Your payoff "is intended for you, and will not be honored if sent in by a third-party dealership." BMW also states that it does not negotiate payoffs or residual values. |
| GM Financial (Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, Cadillac) | Restricted | GM Financial does not currently process lease purchase requests through non-GM dealerships. |
| Tesla Lease Trust | Yes, on request | "To initiate a third-party purchase, contact us." A purchase fee of up to $350 applies. |
| Mercedes-Benz Financial Services | Not published | Your dealer or the lender can help you purchase. Only the primary account holder can request a payoff quote online. |
| Hyundai Motor Finance | Not published | Payoff quotes are available online or by phone. Sending the title to someone else needs the primary account holder's written authorization. |
| Kia Finance America | Not published | Kia lists three ways to buy the car: through your Kia dealer, by calling a Lease-End Advisor, or by getting a buyout quote. |
| Nissan Motor Acceptance | Not published | Purchase at the purchase option price in your lease; "depending on your state" you may need to buy through a dealer or financial institution. |
| Ford Credit | Not published | Purchase or return through the Ford dealer you leased from, or through any participating Ford dealer if you have moved and that dealer is no longer convenient. Some electric vehicles may not be eligible for purchase at lease end. |
"Not published" means we could not find a statement either way on the lender's own pages. It does not mean outside buyers are allowed. Ask the lender's lease-end team before you agree to a sale with anyone.
Lender pages read on October 14, 2026: Toyota Financial Services (and its title FAQ), Lexus Financial Services, American Honda Finance, BMW Financial Services (and its FAQ), GM Financial, Tesla, Mercedes-Benz Financial Services (and its FAQ), Hyundai Motor Finance, Kia Finance America, Nissan Finance and Ford Credit. Lender rules change without notice, so we review this table every quarter.
You do not have to hand the car back. We can still buy many leased cars that the big online car buyers turn down, Toyota and Lexus included, and we take care of the payoff and the paperwork. Send us your lease details first. You also have two routes on your own:

Your payoff is the starting point for every option. Most lenders show it in your online account or app: Toyota in the TFS online account or at 1-800-286-0652, BMW under Payoff Information in My BMW, Hyundai online or by phone, Mercedes-Benz online for the primary account holder only. Ask for the quote in writing and note its expiration date.
Then send it to us. We run a lease return check for drivers in Glendale and across Los Angeles: you send your lease details and sixteen photos, about five minutes with the guided camera, and we send back one page with four numbers: return it, fix it first, sell it, or buy it and keep it. It usually arrives within a business day of having your lender's payoff quote. If selling is your best option, we can often still buy the car when your lender turns away outside buyers, and we handle the payoff and the paperwork for you.
Whatever you decide about your current car, here is how to move forward with us.

Compare your purchase option price (or your payoff if you are ending early) with what the car would sell for today. If the second number is higher, you have equity. We work both numbers out in the lease return check.
Honda, Acura and BMW publish rules that turn away most outside buyers: Honda and Acura sell only to the lessee or their own dealers, and BMW does not honor a payoff sent by a third-party dealership. Toyota's page still describes assigning your purchase option to a third-party dealer, but in our experience Toyota and Lexus have stopped accepting outside payoffs since October 1, 2026. That is why the big online buyers often turn these cars down. In many cases we can still buy them, so send us your details before you return the car.
Your leasing company is paid off within 21 days of the sale, and we handle the paperwork with the lender.
Yes. California law gives you the right to end a lease before its scheduled end date and limits what the lender can charge for it (Civil Code section 2987). Selling the car can cost less than handing it back, so send us your payoff and we compare the two.
In effect, yes. You paid tax on each monthly payment for the use of the car. Buying it is a separate purchase, and California taxes it on the price you pay at the buyout, whatever tax you already paid on the payments. The one possible exception is the 10-day resale rule in the sales tax section above.
Some lenders allow it. BMW says it may offer up to six months beyond maturity, Tesla up to six months once, GM Financial one month past the scheduled end, and Ford "under certain circumstances." Ask your lender before the end date.
